Kafi Ahmad, of Syracuse, who left Iraq in 1995 and came to Syracuse in 1999, became a citizen with 65 other people Thursday at the Onondaga County Courthouse.Sixty-six people were naturalized as United States citizens today at the Onondaga County Courthouse.

The new citizens came from 29 countries including Vietnam, Russia, India, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bosnia, Nepal, Great Britain, Italy, Ukraine, Togo and Sudan.

Jaspal Kaur, a native of India, was among them. Kaur, 34, emigrated here in 1997 to be reunited with her husband. Her husband, Amarjit Singh, owns India House on Old Liverpool Road.

Kaur said she looks forward to taking advantage of all the benefits that come with American citizenship, especially voting.

"Voting is the most important,'' said Adela Hued, 59, who emigrated from the Dominican Republic 36 years ago.

Onondaga County Family Court Judge Michael Hanuszczak administered the ceremony.

Staff writer Maureen Sieh will have a full report on this story in Friday's Post-Standard.

Kafi Ahmad, an Iraqi native, holds her naturalization certificate at the Onondaga County Courthouse today. She's one of 66 people from 29 countries who became naturalized as United States citizens.Iraqi native Kafi Ahmad is one American I'm sure won't stay home on Election Day.

Kafi takes voting seriously. Three years ago, she traveled 700 miles on a bus and taxi from Syracuse to Virginia to vote in Iraq's first independent election in nearly 50 years.

Now that Kafi is an American citizen, she'll have no problem walking to a polling station in her neighborhood on Syracuse's South Side to vote in the presidential elections.

Kafi was one of 66 people from 29 countries who became United States citizens today at the Onondaga County Courthouse.

People like Kafi value voting because they've spent much of their lives fighting for something that many people born in this country take for granted.

Kafi is still haunted by the horror of watching thousands of Iraqis killed, tortured, jailed in underground prisons and forced to leave their homes because they opposed Saddam Hussein's regime
